The Committee's
Mandate
On August 27, 2001, the Legislative Assembly instructed the Select
Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs to report by November 30, 2001,
on the form and content of questions that should be used in a one-time,
province-wide referendum on the principles that should guide B.C.'s
approach to treaty negotiations.
The Committee is inviting written submissions and conducting regional
public hearings to hear recommendations by all British Columbians on this
topic.
A series of hearings will be held in October where interested
individuals and organizations may appear before the Committee to present
their recommendations. The information provided at the public hearings and
in the written submissions will form the basis of the Committee's report.
The final report and its recommendations will assist the government in
preparing questions that will be put to all British Columbians in a
one-time, province-wide referendum on the provincial approach to
negotiating treaties.
Negotiating workable, fair and affordable treaties with First Nations
will benefit all British Columbians. The Committee's Terms of Reference do
not include considering whether to hold a referendum, or the question of
whether to continue negotiating treaties. The Committee will be
considering only those matters concerning questions for a referendum on
principles to guide the provincial approach to treaty negotiations.
Submissions & Hearings
Individuals and organizations wishing to make a written submission or
appear at a public hearing should contact the Office of the Clerk of
Committees.
Notices of upcoming public hearings can be found
on this web site and will appear in regional newspapers. Written
submissions will be accepted at the Office of the Clerk of Committees
until November 2, 2001. Please consider forwarding your submission
in an electronic form.
Please consult the guide for witnesses
and the guide for
written submissions for further information.
