WEDNESDAY, MAY 7, 2003

The committee met at 9:35 a.m.

Election of Chair and Deputy Chair

           K. Ryan-Lloyd: Good morning, everyone. This is the first meeting of the Select Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs for the new session of parliament, the fourth session. As there is not yet a Chair elected to serve on this committee, I would like to open up the floor to nominations for that position.

           R. Harris: I'll nominate Gillian Trumper.

           K. Ryan-Lloyd: Are there any other nominations? I'll call the question three times. Are there any other nominations? Any other nominations? Seeing no further nominations, do you accept the nomination, Gillian?

           G. Trumper: I do.

           K. Ryan-Lloyd: I'll put the question on the motion, then.

           Motion approved.

           [G. Trumper in the chair.]

           G. Trumper (Chair): Good morning. Thanks very much.

We're going to be very brief this morning for obvious reasons. I would call for nominations for the Deputy Chair.

           M. Hunter: Madam Chair, I'd like to nominate Mr. Roger Harris as Deputy Chair.

           G. Trumper (Chair): I will call for further nominations. First time. Second time. Any further nominations? Third time. Any further nominations?

Mr. Harris, do you accept the nomination?

           R. Harris: I accept. Thank you.

           G. Trumper (Chair): Thank you. Nominations are closed.

           Motion approved.

           G. Trumper (Chair): Thank you very much.

This is simple. What I'm going to do is, following this meeting in the next few days, talk to the Minister of Finance and find out what our orders are. As we're coming to the end of this sitting, we need to know what we're supposed to be doing during the summer months and whether they have plans for us to do something very specific come the fall. We need to be able to plan around that with everything else. That's what I'll be doing. I'll get back to you as soon as I have those orders. I understand they are coming, but we need to be ready to go.

Nothing else? Does anyone else have any questions? With that, if we could have a motion to adjourn.

The committee adjourned at 9:38 a.m.
