VICTORIA – This morning, John Doyle was sworn in as Auditor General of British Columbia. The oath of office was administered by E. George MacMinn, QC, Clerk of the House.

On May 28, 2007, the Legislative Assembly approved the unanimous choice of the all-party Select Standing Committee on Public Accounts to appoint Mr. Doyle, currently Deputy Auditor General for the State of Western Australia.

Following the brief swearing-in ceremony, Mr. Doyle said: “It is an enormous privilege to be appointed the province's new Auditor General, and I look forward to taking up my duties in October.”

“We are delighted that John will be assuming his duties soon and have every confidence that he will work collaboratively with the public accounts committee,” added committee chair Rob Fleming, who attended the ceremony on behalf of committee members.

The Auditor General is an independent statutory officer of the Legislative Assembly, with the responsibility for ensuring financial accountability within the provincial public sector.

John Doyle

Currently, John Doyle is the Deputy Auditor General responsible for all assurance operations within the Office of the Auditor General for Western Australia. This includes the conduct of the attest audit of 210 agencies, special investigations and performance audits across the WA public sector.

Previously, he was an Associate Professor and Head of the School of Accounting and Finance at the University of Notre Dame in Fremantle. He has also held academic positions in local universities, lecturing in Finance, Accounting, Auditing and Software Engineering/Computer Science.

Whilst at Notre Dame, John was also Director, Corporate Governance at the Department of Health reporting directly to the Director General. This role included internal audit, special reviews, investigations and performance examinations across the entire public health sector.

John has also held the position of Chief Financial Officer in a number of major organizations in Western Australia (Lotteries Commission, Edith Cowan University and the East Metropolitan Health Service).

He is well qualified as an accountant (FCPA, FCCA and CA), an auditor (FIIA and CIA) and holds two master's degrees (Master Business Administration and Master of Accounting). Currently, his studies include a master's degree in Medieval History at the University of Western Australia.

He sits on the CPA Public Sector Committee and is a long-serving member of the Princess Margaret Hospital for Children Foundation. Recently, he has been nominated an Adjunct Professor at the University of Notre Dame.

John has been married to Gillie for over 26 years and they have one daughter – Eleanor, aged 24.
