Present: Ron Cantelon, MLA (Convener); Bill Bennett, MLA; Maurine Karagianis, MLA; Leonard Krog, MLA; Dennis MacKay, MLA; Mary Polak, MLA; Valerie Roddick, MLA; John Rustad, MLA; Nicholas Simons, MLA
Unavoidably Absent: Jagrup Brar, MLA
1. There not yet being a Chair elected to serve the Committee, the meeting was called to order at 9:17 a.m. by the Clerk Assistant and Committee Clerk.
2. Resolved, that Ron Cantelon, MLA be elected Chair of the Select Standing Committee on Children and Youth. (Leonard Krog, MLA)
3. Resolved, that Nicholas Simons, MLA be elected Deputy Chair of the Select Standing Committee on Children and Youth. (Dennis MacKay, MLA)
4. Resolved, that the Sub-committee on Child Deaths be comprised of the Chair, Deputy Chair, Maurine Karagianis, MLA and Dennis MacKay, MLA. (John Rustad, MLA)
5. Resolved, that the Committee meet in-camera to discuss future agenda items. (John Rustad, MLA)
6. The Committee met in-camera from 9:20 a.m. to 9:26 a.m.
7. The Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair at 9:26 a.m.

Election of Chair and Deputy Chair
K. Ryan-Lloyd (Clerk Assistant and Committee Clerk): Good morning, everyone. As this is the first meeting of the Select Standing Committee on Children and Youth for the present session, I would like to begin today's meeting by opening the call for nominations to the position of Chair.
L. Krog: I would nominate Mr. Cantelon, the member for Nanaimo-Parksville.
K. Ryan-Lloyd (Committee Clerk): Are there any further nominations?
Seeing none, Mr. Cantelon, do you accept the nomination?
R. Cantelon: I accept the nomination.
K. Ryan-Lloyd (Committee Clerk): All right. I'll put the question.
Motion approved.
[R. Cantelon in the chair.]
R. Cantelon (Chair): The next order of business is the election of the Deputy Chair. Do we hear nominations?
D. MacKay: I would nominate Nicholas Simons, the member for Powell River–Sunshine Coast.
R. Cantelon (Chair): Do you accept the nomination?
N. Simons: I do.
R. Cantelon (Chair): Are there any nominations? Are there any other nominations? Thirdly, are there any further nominations? If not, I declare you elected. Let's have a motion just to confirm it and really wrap it up tight.
Motion approved.
R. Cantelon (Chair): It's just double indemnity, Nicholas. You can never be too sure.
We also had a subcommittee on child deaths before. We haven't used that committee. It hasn't come into play yet, but we could restrike the committee, if that's the pleasure of the committee.
Subcommittee on Child Death Reviews
K. Ryan-Lloyd (Committee Clerk): We had the Chair, the Deputy Chair, Dennis and Mary.
R. Cantelon (Chair): That's right. We had the Chair, the Deputy Chair, Dennis MacKay and Mary Polak on that.
Were you on it too, Maurine?
M. Karagianis: I think I was on it.
R. Cantelon (Chair): I think you were.
K. Ryan-Lloyd (Committee Clerk): Oh, Mary wasn't on it. I apologize now. It was Dennis, Maurine, the Chair and the Deputy Chair.
M. Karagianis: Yes, I was sitting on that committee.
R. Cantelon (Chair): Let's have a motion to strike that committee, with the names we just gave.
Motion approved.
R. Cantelon (Chair): Now, the future agenda. I've had some discussions, and formal discussions with the new Deputy Chair. We talked with the Representative regarding agenda items, and it would seem that her agenda became quite full. Therefore, our agenda became quite full.
L. Krog: I'm wondering, Mr. Chair, if we should be moving in camera at this stage.
J. Rustad: That's what I was about to do.
R. Cantelon (Chair): Thank you. Good point.
J. Rustad: A motion to go in camera.
Motion approved.
The committee continued in camera from 9:20 a.m. to 9:26 a.m.

R. Cantelon (Chair): Any further business?
J. Rustad: Motion to adjourn.
Motion approved.
R. Cantelon (Chair): We stand adjourned.
