Title

B.C. Provincial Elections WebQuest

Audience

Social Studies 10, and 11, Civics 11

Overview

The students will use guiding questions and research the electoral system in B.C. Next, the students will present their research information in the form of several journal entries.

Objectives

It is expected that the students will do the following things:

  • research the electoral system in B.C.
  • research the development of the provincial political party system in B.C.
  • use research information to create first person journals

Activities and Method

  • students will assume a character in a role-play situation in which they want to run as an MLA candidate
  • the students will complete on-line research by using the links provided
  • the research information will be used by the students to answer/address a list of specific questions that are listed on the WebQuest
  • after gathering their research information, the students will use their findings to create several journal entries

Preparation

  • teacher must be familiar with the electoral system in B.C.
  • teacher needs to be familiar with the WebQuest site

Duration of Activity

3 hours

Learning Outcomes

The students will be able to describe the process involved in becoming an MLA candidate.

The students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the electoral system in B.C.

The students will be able to explain how the election process has evolved in B.C.

Materials and Resources

The teacher must have access to computers with internet capabilities to use the WebQuest.
