Discover Your Legislature

Introduction for Educators

The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia has a dynamic resource for educators available on-line. Discover Your Legislature has been developed to enhance student and teacher understandings of the place, people and purpose of the Legislative Assembly. This information also enables students to become active educated citizens, able to think critically and contribute constructively to society.

Discover Your Legislature is most useful to students studying Social Studies in Grade 5, 10 and in their Civic Studies 11 course. As there is an abundance of current and historical information embedded throughout this resource, students taking Social Studies 11, Law 12, and BC First Nations 12 would also benefit from using this resource as a learning tool. There is also the opportunity to develop skills in identifying and clarifying problems, issues and inquiries.

Students can test their knowledge by playing the Interactive Games that reinforce the content. The Word Search is an excellent tool to complement language arts learned in social studies and each of the ten levels changes each time you play. The added challenge is the timer. The game can also be printed and used in a typical classroom setting. The Parliamentary Puzzle offers a variety of true/false questions in two versions: Purpose and History. The two levels of the Let the Session Begin (true/false questions for the younger grades and multiple choice questions for the higher grades) offer students the opportunity to direct Members in the Chamber to their appropriate seats. While playing the games, students have the option to minimize the game screen, search for the answer and then maximize the game screen to correctly answer the questions.

Discover Your Legislature is filled with textual and photographic information about the people, the Parliament Buildings and the history and purpose of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. The Glossary supports students expanding their language base, the History section provides a chronological overview of significant events in legislative history and the Bibliography provides opportunities for further discovery of information.
