B.C. HYDRO AND POWER AUTHORITY 
REFERENDUM ACT, 2000

Whereas B.C. Hydro has been a fundamental part of the economic development of British Columbia over the past 40 years;

Whereas B.C. Hydro has been essential in bringing electricity to remote regions of the province and developing our world-class hydroelectric generation, transmission and distribution facilities;

Whereas B.C. Hydro's assets have provided low-cost, reliable power to fuel economic growth in British Columbia;

Whereas British Columbia citizens have contributed and built B.C. Hydro with their financial contributions and labour.

HER MAJESTY, by and with the consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, enacts as follows:

Referendum to precede any act allowing the privatization of all or part of the
B.C. Hydro and Power Authority

The government must not introduce an Act privatizing any domestic assets of the British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority unless a referendum has first been conducted under the Referendum Act with respect to the subject matter of the bill.

 
Explanatory Note

This Bill requires the government to conduct a referendum before the privatization of all or part of B.C. Hydro.
