BILL M 206 -- 2000

GRIZZLY BEAR HUNTING PROHIBITION ACT

WHEREAS grizzly bears are extirpated in much of their historic range across North America;

AND WHEREAS grizzly bear populations in British Columbia are classed as "vulnerable" by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC);

AND WHEREAS grizzly bear hunting is contributing to the decline of grizzly bear populations in British Columbia;

HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, enacts as follows:

Definitions

1 In this Act, "grizzly bear" means a bear of the species Ursus arctos horribilis.


Consequential Amendments

Wildlife Act

2 Section 1 (1) of the Wildlife Act, R.S.B.C. 1996, c. 488, is amended by adding the following definition:

"grizzly bear" means a bear of the species Ursus arctos horribilis;.

3 Section 26 (1) is amended by adding the following paragraph:

(a.1) that is a grizzly bear, .

4 Section 84 (1) (a) (i) is amended by striking out "26 (1) (a)," and substituting "26 (1) (a), (a.1),".

Commencement

5 This Act comes into force by regulation of the Lieutenant Governor in Council.
