The Hon. G. Campbell (Premier) made a statement regarding four deaths in an accident at the Sullivan mine in Kimberley.

Mr. Rustad presented the Report of the Special Committee to Appoint a Merit Commissioner.

The Report was taken as read and received.

By leave of the House, Mr. Rustad moved that the Report be adopted.

Motion agreed to.

By leave, Mr. Rustad moved--

That this House recommend to Her Honour the Lieutenant Governor the appointment of Ms. Joy Illington as a statutory Officer of the Legislature, to exercise the powers and duties assigned to the Merit Commissioner for the province of British Columbia pursuant to the Public Service Act (RSBC 1996 c. 385).

Motion agreed to.

The House proceeded to "Orders of the Day."

Order for Committee of Supply called.

Pursuant to Sessional Order, order called for Section A of Committee of Supply.

On the motion for second reading of Bill (No. 34) intituled Representative for Children and Youth Act, a debate arose.

Be it resolved that this House appoint Mr. Errol Price as the Acting Auditor General for the Province of British Columbia pursuant to section 7 of the Auditor General Act.

71  Ms. Karagianis to move--
Be it resolved that this House urges government to consult with First Nations communities to establish First Nations artifacts and midden protection protocols for all communities in British Columbia and a program to assist in protection, conservation and stewardship of First Nations archaeological sites.
