By leave, on the motion of Ms. Kwan, Bill (No. M 214) intituled Supervised Injection Facility Designation Act, 2008 was introduced, read a first time, and Ordered to be placed on the Orders of the Day for second reading at the next sitting after today.

By leave, the Hon. M. de Jong moved —

That a Special Committee be appointed to select and unanimously recommend to the Legislative Assembly, the appointment of a Police Complaint Commissioner for the Province of British Columbia, pursuant to section 47 of the Police Act (RSBC 1996 c. 367), and that the Special Committee so appointed shall have the powers of a Select Standing Committee and is also empowered:

(a) to appoint of their number, one or more subcommittees and to refer to such subcommittees any of the matters referred to the Committee;

(b) to sit during a period in which the House is adjourned, during the recess after prorogation until the next following Session and during any sitting of the House;

(c) to adjourn from place to place as may be convenient;

(d) to retain such personnel as required to assist the Committee;

and shall report to the House as soon as possible, or following any adjournment, or at the next following Session, as the case may be; to deposit the original of its reports with the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly during a period of adjournment and upon resumption of the sittings of the House, the Chair shall present all reports to the Legislative Assembly.

The said Special Committee is to be composed of J. Rustad (Convenor); Messrs. MacKay and Nuraney and Messrs. Krog and Farnworth.

Motion agreed to.

Mr. Cantelon presented the Report of the Select Standing Committee on Children and Youth for the Fourth Session of the Thirty-eighth Parliament.

The report was taken as read and received.

By leave of the House, Mr. Cantelon moved that the Report be adopted.

Be it resolved that this Legislature apologizes for the events of May 23, 1914, when 376 passengers of the Komagata Maru, stationed off Vancouver harbour, were denied entry by Canada. The House deeply regrets that the passengers, who sought refuge in our country and our province, were turned away without benefit of the fair and impartial treatment befitting a society where people of all cultures are welcomed and accepted.

Be it resolved that this House recognizes the tremendous lasting economic, sport, cultural and social legacies that will benefit communities across the Province of British Columbia and all of Canada from hosting the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
