TAXI INDUSTRY SAFETY AND FAIRNESS ACT

This Act specifies that the powers, functions and duties of the Passenger Transportation Board include for-profit ridesharing services. It also increases the potential fine for the offence of operating a motor vehicle as a type of commercial passenger vehicle without holding a valid permit from $5 000 to $20 000 in order to provide the Passenger Safety Board an effective deterrent for operators that flout existing laws.

HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, enacts as follows:

1 Section 1 of the Passenger Transportation Act S.B.C. 2004, c. 39 is amended by adding to the definition of "commercial passenger vehicle" the words "including vehicles operated as part of for-profit ridesharing services".

2 Section 7 of the Passenger Transportation Act S.B.C. 2004, c. 39 is amended by adding to subsection (1) (b) (i) the words "or commercial passenger vehicles operating as part of for-profit ridesharing services".

3 Section 57 of the Passenger Transportation Act S.B.C. 2004, c. 39 is amended by striking out "$5 000" in subsection (3) and replacing it with "$20 000".
