ELECTRONIC PETITIONS ACT, 2014

This Bill modernizes the practice of petitioning and improves democratic participation by allowing for the acceptance of electronic petitions in the House. It will allow British Columbians to easily communicate their concerns to the House by signing petitions online. Signatories will provide their name, email, phone number, and mailing address to validate their identities.

HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, enacts as follows:

Definition

1  "electronic petition" means a petition that may be completed online.

Acceptance of electronic petitions

2  The House shall accept electronic petitions that include the signatories'

(a) full legal name;

(b) email address;

(c) phone number; and

(d) mailing address.

Conflict with Standing Orders

3  In the event of a conflict between this Act and the Standing Orders, this Act prevails.

Commencement

4  This Act comes into force upon Royal Assent.
