THURSDAY, MARCH 30, 2006

The committee met at 1:33 p.m.

Election of Chair and Deputy Chair

           C. James (Clerk Assistant and Clerk of Committees): This being the first meeting of the Select Standing Committee on Crown Corporations for the current session and there not being a Chairperson, I call for nominations for the Chair.

           J. Rustad: I nominate Iain Black.

           C. James (Clerk of Committees): Any further nominations? Any further nominations? I see no further nominations.

I presume you accept the nomination.

           I. Black (Convener): I do.

           C. James (Clerk of Committees): That being the case, I'll put the question on the motion.

           Motion approved.

           [I. Black in the chair.]

           I. Black (Chair): The next item on the agenda is the election of the Deputy Chair. Can I receive a nomination for the Deputy Chair, please?

A Voice: I nominate Guy Gentner.

           I. Black (Chair): Any other nominations?

           That being the case….

           Motion approved.

           Interjection.

           I. Black (Chair): We're assuming you accept, yes — seeing as we've just elected you.

Election of Subcommittee
on Agenda and Procedure

           I. Black (Chair): The next item on the agenda is the election of a subcommittee on agenda and procedure. This subcommittee typically consists of the Chair and the vice-Chair. I would look for a motion from the floor to strike the subcommittee and have the Chair and the vice-Chair as the members.

           Motion approved.

           I. Black (Chair): Well, we'll have some fun.

           Any other business?

           R. Cantelon: We'll adjourn.

           I. Black (Chair): Terrific. Moving adjournment is not….

A Voice: Just got here in time to do that.

           I. Black (Chair): Good stuff.

           Interjection.

           I. Black (Chair): I'm not sure. I'll defer that to our Clerk of Committees.

[1335]

Just as a take-home, because we all like to have a loot bag from birthday parties, I have the Select Standing Committee on Crown Corporations list of Crown corporations as per the Crown corporations secretariat, as well as a brief description of each one of them per their own websites and the date that they were last reported on by this committee. It gives us all a little bit of a starting point to muse through in the coming days and weeks.

You and I will have a little more intimate discussion on that, I suspect.

I'll leave that as a take-away for everybody.

           C. James (Clerk of Committees): If I could also just introduce Jonathan Fershau, who's been the researcher for the committee over the past three years.

           A Voice: Anything else?

           I. Black (Chair): Have we got a motion for adjournment?

           Motion approved.

           I. Black (Chair): Have a good day, gentlemen.

The committee adjourned at 1:36 p.m.
