PERFORMANCE REPORTS OF SIX CROWN CORPORATIONS REVIEWED BY CROWN CORPORATIONS COMMITTEE

Victoria – The Select Standing Committee on Crown Corporations released its reviews of the annual reports and service plans prepared by six of British Columbia's Crown corporations. The Committee's report — which reviews the reports prepared by ICBC, BC Hydro, BC Securities Commission, Partnerships BC, BC Lottery Corporation, and BC Innovation Council — outlines the Committee's observations on the various performance reports and provides 14 specific recommendations for implementation.

“The Committee plays an important role in ensuring that the public is provided with clear and concise information on the Crown Corporations' anticipated and actual levels of performance,” said committee chair, Iain Black, MLA. “Members were particularly impressed with the presentation of financial and non-financial performance indicators used by both BC Hydro and ICBC in their reports.”

Senior officers of the six Crown Corporations were invited to provide the Committee with an overview of the Crown Corporation's business lines and to discuss the Corporation's goals, objectives and performance measures as identified in their annual reports and service plans. During their presentations, the witnesses were asked to:

• Identify the Corporation's mandate,
• Outline how the programs and services delivered by the Corporation meet the government's objectives,
• Identify challenges that exist in carrying out the Corporation's mandate,
• Discuss whether the Corporation has met its anticipated results, and
• Provide information on how the Corporation evaluates the success of the programs delivered.

“The hearings conducted by the Crown Corporations Committee provide a unique opportunity hold the chief executive officers of B.C.'s Crown corporations accountable,” added Black. “We are satisfied that the recommendations made in this report addressed the particular concerns raised by committee members.”
