Evelyn Gillespie was appointed Minister of Women’s Equality on November 1, 2000.

She previously served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Children and Families and is Deputy Chair of the Select Standing Committee on Public Accounts. From 1996 to 1998, Ms. Gillespie chaired the Gove Committee.

Ms. Gillespie was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1996. She represents the riding of Comox Valley.

Born and raised in Calgary, she graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1976 with a degree in recreation education.

Before her election as an MLA, she co-ordinated volunteer programs at a Calgary shelter for abused women and their children. She has also worked as a co-ordinator of volunteer programs at the Addiction Research Foundation in Toronto and with the Vancouver Health Department. She has also served as secretary of the Comox Valley Community Health Council.

Evelyn Gillespie and her husband Bruce operate a small resort in the Comox Valley. They have three children.
