Sue Hammell was appointed Minister of Multiculturalism and Immigration and Minister Responsible for the Public Service on February 29, 2000.

Ms. Hammell served as the Minister of Women's Equality from February 1996 to July 1999. In October 1995 she was appointed Minister of Housing, Recreation and Consumer Services and Minister Responsible for Co-operatives, and served in that capacity until the 1996 general election. In addition, she was Government Caucus Chair and has been active on several legislative committees.

She was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1991 and was re-elected in 1996. She represents the riding of Surrey-Green Timbers.

Born in Vancouver, Ms. Hammell was raised on Sea Island in Richmond. After graduating with a bachelor of arts in education from the University of British Columbia, she taught in Verdun, Quebec, and in Courtenay and Surrey, British Columbia. Before being elected to the Legislature, she worked as the executive assistant to Surrey Mayor Bob Bose.

Ms. Hammell is married and has one daughter, Sage.
