Steve Orcherton was elected to serve as the Deputy Whip for the Government Caucus in October 1997 and still serves in that capacity. In November 2000, Steve was also appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Human Rights and the Provincial Capital Commission. Previously, he served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Advanced Education, Training and Technology from February to November 2000. Before that, he served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Social Development and Economic Security from July 1999 to February 2000.

Elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1996, Steve represents the constituency of Victoria-Hillside.

A certified cook by trade, Steve worked at the Glendale Lodge prior to taking over the full-time position as Secretary-Treasurer of the Victoria Labour Council in 1989.

Born in Fort Churchill, Manitoba, Steve moved with his family to Victoria as a small child. Active in the community, he has served it in many professional roles, including: Member of the Board of Governors of Camosun College, Member of the Board of Referees of the Unemployment Insurance Commission and organizer of the Victoria Labour Council Annual Labour Day Picnic.

Steve played an instrumental role in establishing the Workers Employment Standards Advocacy Program, the Workers with Disabilities Project and the Workers Unemployment Insurance Advisory. He was also a founder of the Annual Slowpitch Tournament of Hope and was a Vice-President of the Victoria Labour Council Credit Union.

Steve and Peg Orcherton reside in Victoria and have four children, Levi, Caitlin, Mackenzie and Connor.
