elected: 1986, 1991, 1996

NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY

Moe Sihota has held several portfolios in government. As Minister of Education, Skills and Training he initiated a review of the province's student loan policies, apprenticeship training programmes and expanded distance education opportunities.

As Minister of Environment, Lands and Parks he created over 200 new provincial parks, introduced the toughest clean air laws in Canada and initiated a regime of sustainable fish protection and forest practices.

As Labour Minister he introduced a new Labour Code that resulted in the province experiencing the fewest days lost to strikes since the second world war. He also launched a Royal Commission into the operation of the Worker's Compensation Board and extended W.C.B. coverage to farm workers. In addition, Moe also oversaw the largest consecutive increases in the minimum wage.

Moe has also served as Minister Responsible for BC Hydro, Minister Responsible for the Insurance Corporation of BC, and Minister Responsible for Constitutional Affairs, as well as Government House Leader.

Moe was first elected in 1986 -- the first Indo-Canadian elected to a legislature in Canada. He is the MLA for Esquimalt-Metchosin. He holds a degree in law from the University of Victoria and a degree in social work from the University of British Columbia.

Moe and Jessie Sihota have two children, Karina and Rajan.
