Mike Hunter was first elected in the 2001 provincial general election in the riding of Nanaimo. Mike currently serves as the Caucus Deputy Whip and Chair of the Vancouver Island Caucus Committee. He is a member of the Government Caucus Committee on Communities and Safety and a member of the following Legislative Select Standing Committees: Aboriginal Affairs; Finance and Government Services; Legislative Initiatives; and Parliamentary Reform, Ethical Conduct, Standing Orders and Private Bills. In addition, he serves as Deputy Chair of the Special Committee to Review the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and as a member of the Special Committee to Appoint a Merit Commissioner.

Before becoming an MLA, Mike worked at his Nanaimo-based business consulting company which he co-owns. Mike earned a Bachelor's degree in 1968 from the University of Leicester and a Master's degree in economics from Simon Fraser University in 1970. From 1971 to 1984, Mike worked for the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans in both Vancouver and Ottawa, specializing in international affairs. He represented Canada on bilateral and multilateral fisheries commissions, including the International Pacific Halibut Commission, and served as the chief negotiator on the Pacific Salmon Treaty negotiations with the United States. As President of the Fisheries Council of BC from 1984 to 1999, Mike represented the seafood processing industry nationally and internationally.

Born in 1947 in England, Mike immigrated to Canada in 1968 and has lived in Vancouver, Ottawa and now Nanaimo. He and his wife, Joy, have four children and two grandchildren. He enjoys boating, soccer, rugby and doing home renovations.
