Born in 1950 in Vancouver, Ken grew up in Fraserview and graduated from Killarney High School in 1968. He attended UBC and, upon earning his Certified General Accountant designation in 1976, Ken went to work as a public practice accountant before moving into private business in 1980.

In 1997 he was named a finalist for the Richmond Chamber of Commerce "Entrepreneur of the Year" award. Since 1986 Ken has served as a Richmond Savings Credit Union director and from 1995 to 1998 he served as chair. He is a past director of Coast Capital Savings, which was created through the recent merger of Richmond Savings, Pacific Coast Savings and Surrey Metro Savings, and is Canada's second largest credit union.

Before becoming an MLA, Ken was serving the City of Richmond in his third term as a City councillor. He was the chief executive officer and partner of a lower mainland based Transportation Company.

Ken Johnston was first elected in the riding of Vancouver-Fraserview in the 2001 provincial election. Ken currently serves as a member of the Government Caucus Committee on Government Operations. He also serves on Legislative Standing Committees: Parliamentary Reform, Ethical Conduct, Standing Orders and Private Bills, Legislative Initiatives, additionally he is a member of the Special Committee to Review the Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act. Committees he previously served on were Health and Crown Corporations. Ken is working to have Amber Alert implemented in British Columbia.

Ken is a member of the Vancouver Fraserview Rotary Club and the Fraserview Golf Course Men’s Club and was involved with the Working Poor Fund, a fund that supports working families in need. Ken is also a supporter of the Fraserview Boys and Girls club and the organization in general.

Ken and Diane Johnston married in 1972 in Fraserview and have two grown children.
