Brian Kerr was first elected in the 2001 provincial general election in the riding of Malahat-Juan de Fuca. Brian currently serves as a member of the Government Caucus Committee on the Economy and Government Operations. Brian also sits on two Legislative Standing Committees: Finance and Government Services (where he serves as Deputy Chair), and Public Accounts (which he served as Deputy Chair). He was also a member of the Core Review and Deregulation Task Force.

Before becoming an MLA, Brian was a chartered accountant and small business owner. He has owned and operated successful small businesses. Brian is the co-founder and managing partner of a grocery store, Nester's Market, which was awarded the Gold Award of Merit by the three thousand member Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers as well as selected as the best small surface store in Canada . After earning his chartered accountant professional designation in 1974, Brian spent the next 16 years as a partner in a public practice accounting firm.

Brian's professional appointments included: BC Institute of Chartered Accountants executive member (1991-1996); BC Institute of Chartered Accountants president (1996); and, Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants Board of Governors member (1995). As a result of Brian's dedication to his community and profession, he was elected a Fellow of the BC Institute of Chartered Accounts in 1995. Brian also served as the South Cowichan Chamber of Commerce treasurer and director.

Born in 1945, Brian and his wife Elaine married in 1968; they have two children and three grandchildren.
