Harold Long first served as MLA for McKenzie (now Powell River-Sunshine Coast) from 1986 to 1991. Harold was elected again in the 2001 provincial general election.

Harold currently serves as the Deputy Chair of the Committee of the Whole. He is a member of the Government Caucus Committee on Natural Resources. He is also a member of the following Legislative Select Standing Committees: Health, Legislative Initiatives; and Parliamentary Reform, Ethical Conduct, Standing Orders, and Private Bills.  In addition, he serves on the Special Legislative Committees to Review the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. He also sits with his colleagues on the Vancouver Island Coastal Caucus.

He is a former member of the Government Caucus Committee on Government Operations and served on the Small Scale Salvage Review Committee.

Previously, Harold operated a transportation business, which has been in the family for generations. He joined the family business in 1958 after attending school and in 1979 purchased and expanded the company. In 1986, he was elected Member of the Legislative Assembly and served as Deputy Whip for the Government Caucus. He was also a BC Ferries director until 1991. In 1991, Harold returned to work full-time for the family business and in 1992 he was elected in a by-election to the Powell River municipal council to serve a two-year term. From 1997 to 1999 he also served as a member of the Powell River Mayor's Task Force.

Born in 1941 in Powell River, Harold has lived his entire life in the area; he has four children.
