2 The Employment Standards Act, section 1 "general holiday" is amended to read as:

"general holiday" means New Year's Day, British Columbia Family Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Dominion Day, British Columbia Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving Day, Remembrance Day and Christmas Day;

Consequential

3 The Interpretation Act, section 29 "holiday" subsection (b) is amended to read as:

(b) Dominion Day, Victoria Day, British Columbia Day, Labour Day, Remembrance Day, New Year's Day and British Columbia Family Day.

Commencement

4 This Act comes into force by regulation of the Lieutenant Governor in Council.

Explanatory Notes

It is imperative that the importance of family life be acknowledged. A day recognizing the foundation on which all other societal structures are built, can only increase awareness of the quality and necessity of family, regardless of how the family unit is defined.

This bill recognizes the importance of the family unit through observation of a public holiday on the 3rd Monday in February in each year.
