Michael was elected the MLA for Vancouver-Langara in 2017 and re-elected in 2020. He currently serves as the Shadow Minister for Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation. Michael has served as the Official Opposition Critic for Transportation, Infrastructure and TransLink and the Official Opposition Critic for Justice and the Official Opposition Co-Critic for Indigenous Relations. Michael is a member of the Select Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and the Select Standing Committee on Legislative Initiatives.

Prior to his election, Michael was a business lawyer and partner with Lawson Lundell LLP. Before obtaining his law degree at the University of Victoria, he worked as a Special Assistant to the Right Honourable Kim Campbell in Vancouver and Ottawa. He also holds a BSc in Biology, a BA (Hons) in Political Science and an MA degree in Political Science with a focus on environmental regulations.

Michael has served as the past Chair of the Board of Directors of Arts Umbrella and Alumni UBC. He has also served as a past Vice-Chair and Board member of Science World British Columbia, SUCCESS and Leadership Vancouver.  Michael is a past Board member of the YMCA of Greater Vancouver Foundation, the Justice Education Society of BC, Sustainable Cities International and the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association.

A son of Hong Kong immigrants, Michael was born and raised in Vancouver. He and his wife Christina have three young adult children.
