Special Committee to Review the Personal Information Protection Act

Welcome

On April 13, 2021  the Legislative Assembly agreed that a Special Committee be appointed to continue its review of the Personal Information Protection Act [SBC 2003, c. 63] in accordance with section 59 of that Act.

The Act governs how private sector organizations can collect, use, and disclose personal information. It also requires organizations to protect and secure personal information against unauthorized use or disclosure, and grants individuals the right to access their own personal information. Section 59 of the Act requires a Special Committee to review the Act every six years.

As part of its review, the Committee held a public consultation process which received 100 written and oral submissions. Transcripts and meeting documents are available under Committee Meetings and written submissions are posted under Committee Documents. Committee Members would like to thank all those who participated in the process.

The Committee released its report Modernizing British Columbia's Private Sector Privacy Law on December 6, 2021. Read the Media Release.
