VICTORIA – The Select Standing Committee on Children and Youth has launched a second phase in its special project examining youth mental health in British Columbia. The second phase will focus on the development of solutions to enhance youth mental health services and outcomes.
The committee is holding public meetings with key service providers and stakeholders in spring 2015. Written submissions are also being accepted through the committee’s website for a four-month period. The committee is particularly interested in hearing from youth and families, government agencies, educators, health providers, community service providers and First Nations.
“The committee is seeking concrete and practical solutions for improving and integrating services for youth mental health,” said committee chair Jane Thornthwaite. “The consultations will provide an opportunity for key service providers and stakeholders to recommend enhancements in the areas of early intervention, assessment, treatment, and prevention.”
“We are building on the work completed last year during the first phase,” added deputy chair Doug Donaldson. “The committee’s November 2014 interim report identified six high-priority areas requiring immediate attention, which we will be focusing on with our recommendations.”
