MEDIA RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 28, 2016

VICTORIA – The all-party Special Committee to Appoint a Representative for Children and Youth will reopen its recruitment process inviting additional applications for the position of representative for children and youth. The advertised posting for the position will appear in provincial and national newspapers, on social media, and will be distributed to Aboriginal organizations and related service agencies at the provincial and national levels. The new deadline for additional applications is Sept. 23, 2016.

The committee received many strong applications during its initial recruitment process, but it could not reach a consensus as required by legislation. The committee decided to extend the application period to ensure as comprehensive a process as possible.

The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia established the special committee on March 1, 2016. The committee is mandated to unanimously recommend to the Legislative Assembly the appointment of a representative as provided by the Representative for Children and Youth Act.

The representative is a non-partisan Officer of the Legislature who provides advocacy services to children, young adults and families regarding designated services; monitors, reviews, and audits the effectiveness of these services; and reviews, investigates, and reports on the critical injuries and deaths of children. The appointment is for a term of five years, and may be renewed for one additional five-year term. The salary for the position is equal to the salary paid to the chief judge of the Provincial Court of British Columbia.
