Special Committee extends search for information and privacy commissioner

MEDIA RELEASE

December 6, 2016

Legislative Assembly - Province of British Columbia

The all-party Special Committee to Appoint an Information and Privacy Commissioner is extending its recruitment process and inviting additional applications for the position of Information and Privacy Commissioner. The advertised posting for the position will appear in provincial and national newspapers, and on social media, and will be distributed to related professional and stakeholder organizations at the provincial, national, and international levels. The new deadline for additional applications is January 13, 2017.

The committee received many highly qualified applications during its initial recruitment phase, but was not able to reach a consensus as required by legislation. The committee has decided to extend the application period to ensure as comprehensive an appointment process as possible.

The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia established the committee on March 1, 2016. The committee is mandated to unanimously recommend to the Legislative Assembly the appointment of a Commissioner as provided by the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

The Commissioner is a non-partisan officer of the Legislature who monitors and enforces British Columbia’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and the Personal Information Protection Act. The Commissioner is also designated as the Registrar of Lobbyists under the Lobbyist Registration Act, and registers lobbyists, conducts administrative investigations, and promotes awareness of registration requirements.

Further information, including the advertisement for the position, is available on the committee’s website at https://www.leg.bc.ca/parliamentary-business/committees/40thParliament-5thsession-ipc.

The Members of the committee are:
