VICTORIA – The Select Standing Committee on Children and Youth has released a report on the public consultations on youth mental health in British Columbia. The consultations were held as part of the first phase in the committee’s special project on youth mental health, and included meetings with expert witnesses and youth and families, as well as a call for written submissions. A total of 153 submissions were received from individuals and organizations.
“The consultations revealed that there are significant challenges in BC’s youth mental health system,” said committee chair Jane Thornthwaite. “This report gives voice to the powerful input we received from families, mental health professionals, and other key stakeholders. It also outlines next steps we will take to develop recommendations for the Legislative Assembly.”
“We learned about some of the challenges in current service delivery and heard a number of suggestions on how to improve treatment and prevention of mental health issues in children and youth,” added deputy chair Doug Donaldson. “The committee would like to thank everyone who took the time to make a submission on this very important subject.”
