Every year, the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services holds a public consultation on the next provincial budget. This year, the consultation took place in June. The Committee, in conjunction with the Ministry of Finance, has adjusted the timeline to enable the Committee to deliver a final report to the Legislative Assembly earlier in the budget process. The Committee will review the new timeline, and provide opportunities for stakeholders to share their feedback, at the conclusion of the consultation.
As in previous years, British Columbians are invited to share their thoughts, ideas and priorities by speaking with the Committee at a public hearing, making a written, audio or video submission, or completing a survey. The Committee reviews all the input received to make recommendations to the Legislative Assembly for the next provincial budget.
Why does the Committee consult on the provincial budget?
The Budget Transparency and Accountability Act SBC 2000, c.23 requires a select standing committee of the Legislative Assembly to hold a budget consultation and report on the results by November 15 each year. The Legislative Assembly has assigned this task to the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services.
As part of the consultation, the Act also requires the Minister of Finance to release a budget consultation paper which is referred to the Committee. It outlines the province’s fiscal forecast, key budget issues and how British Columbians can share their views.
This paper must be released by September 15 and formally opens the consultation.
