Special Committee to Review the Personal Information Protection Act

On April 13, 2021  the Legislative Assembly agreed that a Special Committee be appointed to continue its review of the Personal Information Protection Act [SBC 2003, c. 63] in accordance with section 59 of that Act.

The Act governs how private sector organizations can collect, use, and disclose personal information. It also requires organizations to protect and secure personal information against unauthorized use or disclosure, and grants individuals the right to access their own personal information. Section 59 of the Act requires a Special Committee to review the Act every six years.

The Committee will be holding a series of public hearings in June and July and is now accepting written, audio or video submissions. To register to make a presentation to the Committee, please complete the online registration form by 5:00 pm, June 4, 2021. Priority for the public hearings will be given to those who did not have an opportunity to present during the 2020 consultation.

The Committee's consultation portal is open to receive written, audio or video submissions until 5:00 pm, July 30, 2021. Any information provided to the Committee during the 2020 consultation will inform the Committee's consultation, deliberations and recommendations. Those who made a presentation or written submission during the 2020 consultation are invited to provide an updated submission.

All input should focus on the provisions in Bill C-11 and the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), as well as on the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia's recommendations to the Committee. More information is available under Related Links.
